| While a drunk guy in front of me, about 10 seconds before a cop pulled me over, starts swerving onto the shoulder then back onto the road, over the line, then back in his lane.... But instead of the cop pulling the drunk guy over, he pulls me over to give me a speeding ticket for 15km over... Thanks! | |

| Rye, there probably less paper work to give you a ticket than to haul in a drunk! Also if he/she pulled him over and then had to take him in and wait and do paper work he/she might have had to stay after his/her shift is up. | |

Thanks! Hey Rye and Pattip...Just a couple of questions before we crucify the police. - How do you know the guy in front of you was drunk? In this county I swerve all the time for road kill, debris, falling coffee in my car, cell phone ringing etc... - You only got 15km over, what might I ask did he actually clock you at? Now Jonas, you mention tasers being an easy route. I'd say that when a fully crazed individual is swinging a steel pipe at police, then the taser might be a lot safer than shooting the guy with their revolver, especially with the possiblity of diseases and infections that such an individual may be carrying. Tasers aren't perfect but what might you suggest in this instance?

| If you swerve once OK could be something on the road, hot coffee or whatever BUT if you keep doing it wouldn't it be a good idea to find out if there was a problem? Might be medical, might be mechanical, any number of reasons. | |

| Since you cite an extreme case, I shall do likewise. Do you recall an elderly man getting tasered in his hospital bed not so long ago? He was in his 80's. BTW I have the utmost respect for the law, police and the difficulty of the job of law enforcement. However,my overall impression is ( and it is shared by many others and cited in recent official reviews and reports on the use of tasers) that they are used far too frequently and there is a systemic problem with their use. As far as rye observing someone was drunk...you have to ask him . After, many years of driving, and I'm not a cop, it's relatively easy to discern a momentary lapse in concentration from a driver exhibiting "drunk driving behaviour." I have seen many instances of the former and thankfully, a few of the latter. [quote="Batman"] - Jonas wrote:

| If your speeding you deserve at ticket, OK. If your swevering all over the road you should be pulled over, OK. If the police feel that they can't control you to place you under arrest or whatever, BEFORE they use deadly force maybe, maybe just maybe try something like PEPPER SPRAY first? Why use something that is becoming as deadly as the gun, when something else can be used. Batman, do the police receive as much training in Tasers as they do with guns? | |

The Police have a lot of options. Waiting, Talking, Physical Handling, Batons, Tasers, Guns etc. They get training in all of them but as in any case, some have critical experience or better training than others. A few over bearing facts dictate their actions: - Danger to the Public - Danger to self - Danger to Officers - Danger to Property to name a few. It's too bad that Pepper type sprays doesn't always work and really they aren't too practical in many cases since you have to get too close for an accurate shot. The preferred way used to be overwhelming force with as many officers as possible. The only question is how long do you have to get enough troops there before the "Danger's" previously listed. I don't know how Tasers made it to common use, but some of the alternatives are worse.

| For one, the minivan in front of me was going about 50km/h in an 80km/h zone...and he was swerving, back and forth, randomly...not just on a cell phone, or looking out for animals.....dangerous...what if you were coming head on at them?? I also didn't even pass the minivan when I came up to him, BECAUSE he was swerving onto the other side of the road.....then the cop pulls me over about 10-20 seconds later......so it's not like I was speeding like a race car driver I didn't even take the chance to pass the minivan...the cop was a rookie and was looking to hand out an easy ticket, he must have been 22 years old.... Also what the cop says he clocks you at is irrelevent unless you go look at his radar, which I did not, because I knew I was doing at least 15 over anyway...there's not much you can do when the cherries are already in your rear-view mirror unless you have a nice rack. | |

| Hey Rye. Just pay the ticket or put in a pile with your BELL bill. If you can't do the time don't do the crime | |

| I find it interesting that a car in front of you is going 50 in an 80 yet even though you are going at least 95 (15 over the speed limit) that you could be close enough to see whether he was swerving or see if they were on a cell phone without having to pass them.
Irrelevant of the above ... you don't have any control over what a cop sees or does... nor do you have any control over what another driver sees or does.
What you do have control of is what you do...
You were speeding, got a ticket and got caught. Accept responsibility for that and pay the ticket.

I find it interesting that you missed the part where I said about 10 seconds later a police officer pulled me over... That is more than enough time to catch up to a person doing 50km/h in an 80km/h zone don't you think? Wouldn't that just prove my point? - Katzz wrote:

Like I stated, I never said I wasn't going to pay the ticket, I just find it funny that the cop would take the easy road instead of pulling over the clearly drunk driver...unless he was such a rookie that he couldn't tell drunk driver from a sober one...probably why he asked me if I was drunk, even after he stumbled over his own words when he said "dramastically" haha.

| Point is Rye you are viewing this from your perspective... you can't say for sure what the cop saw or didn't see.
You can accept responsibility for your own actions... by paying the ticket. If that is your intent good for you, as for the other person, they possibly got away with one.
What can you really do about it?
Imagine what a great world this would be if everyone took responsibility for their own actions... even though it is only a fantasy.

| A little something else to think about Rye. My hubby got a speeding ticket about year ago. He was doing 70kms in a posted 60 km zone, so 10 kms over the limit. It was only a $25 fine. Our insurance company is now making us pay an extra $30 per month for an entire year. So for a $25 fine, we now have to pay an extra $360 to the insurance company. So don't be surprised if the same thing unfortunately happens to you, sorry for the good news | |

That will only happen if you cancel your insurance and then need to get a new policy....as long as I stay with the same company I'll be alright... I've been good too, only one other ticket in the past 5 years....

| Once you get 3 in 5 years, Rye, then the company you are with gets rid of you pronto! Even if you have been with them for 30 years.
Happened to me...when I was driving far and always in a rush. 3 silly tickets...in the Courtland area. Then they put you into a different group...cost me a fortune for awhile! But then decided to get rid of everything except liability...and saved some money that way.

| Rye, we didn't change insurance companies, it's the same insurance company we've been using for several years and they still upped our rate by $360 a year. Good luck, I hope it doesn't happen to you cause it just sucks. | |
