I cannot believe what I just saw!

I went to the Barrel for lunch today and as I was paying for my food, one of the cooks walked out front with thong style flip flops on!! I thought that was gross! Also that is a serious Health and Safety Violation! She have might as well been in bare feet. I know my food does not come off the floor but her foot was exposed to the same air as my food. I will be returning there anytime soon.

A lot of line cooks and chefs wear clogs too. Are they supposed to wear a totally enclosed shoe?
When I am there my food is exposed to your's or anyone's "emanations" from various parts of their bodies. Look at the peole sitting around you - are they wearing thongs/sandals? Are they sneezing/coughing? Did they was their hands after using the washroom? Are these people in line with you at the salad bar/buffet?

The world is a dirty place-and don't forget paranoia may destroy ya!

You know it is still common to stomp grapes for wine with bare feet.

Oh talking about gross-I was in Detroit on the weekend , in line at a famous Canadian coffee and doughnut chain. I was looking at the counter person and saw what I thought was a bead of sweat on her lip. It wasn't sweat! It grew larger and then dripped off while she was getting an order ready. I went elsewhere for my coffee.

but the other partons don't make my food, and as far as I know anyone who is works in the resturant and in the back they are required to have no slip enclosed shoes, Tim Horton employees are required to wear them and so does Pizza Hut I know because I used to work there

Health violation? From the air lofting up from someone's feet?

Safety violation? Maybe (certainly a safety concern) - But that has no relevance on the quality of the prepared food.

This topic reeks of unfounded drama and hysteria.

Perhaps you should call the restaurant and speak to the management. I am sure he would make changes. Or speak to the cook. It seems in the interest of safety, one would wear enclosed shoes! Imagine if you dropped a huge knife! Or spilled some hot broth!

That doesn't really bother me at all though. Not sure why feet are so offensive...? They are down there near the floor and the floor is not spotless...nor can it be. Do you not cook supper in flipflops? Do people not barbecue in flipflops and bare feet?

-Nonesence unless the kitchen were a sealed room with seperate ventilation and filtering elements with breathing devices, then exposed feet are no more an influence over your food then someone breathing the same air near the food, besides The Barrel is one of the cleanest (if not the cleanest) kitchens in the area, and I delivered to them all, well the Greens of Renton is up there too. Sandles in the kitchen like one mentioned, is if anything a saftey issue, not a sanitary one.

ja+pd=paranoid and not even close. Pd posts are pathetic although occasionally well written are never that good.

I don't think he's pd either otherwise there would be at least 15 others posts about: his health, problems with take-out, how he got ripped off, his dogs, his wife's boss, his health insurance or lack of etc. But I do agree about the flip-flops, but not for the same reasons. Far to dangerous to be working in a kitchen like that wearing them. Better to have clogs or closed shoes. To many thing can happen. Does anyone remember the commercial that ran this Spring about the young cook in the kitchen that gets burnt, I think the Safety council put it out? Good foot wear is important in any job your doing.

Well I would just like to say that I do enjoy the Barrel restaurant...The food is always good...and friendly service

First I am not paranoid...also I am no relation to this pd person and also the Barrel restaurant is a good place to eat I have been there lots...but walking in and seeing a well respected restaurant's cook wearing flip flops it shocked me...I think that it is more of a safety issue...what if that cook dropped a knife and cut her toe off...then the restaurant owners would be at fault...also just because this is forum does not mean that everyone has to attack one person because as simply opinion they may have made

I think that clogs or crocs are a better then old running shoes. Crocs can actually be worn by nurses and doctors in the hospital as they can be sanitized. They are made of rubber allowing then to be thouroughly cleaned and therefore not carry bacteria and germs.

Perhaps the cook changed into flip flops because she was leaving for the day but wore different shoes while in the kitchen?

I was at a restaurant the other day and the cook came out wearing a long white apron, but when he turned around I discovered underneath he was only wearing a thong! Now that wouldn't have been so bad if he weren't 150 lbs overweight and covered in hair like a gorilla. Is that a health violation?
