| Brantford Bell.... I get the same DL speeds with various testers on various locations... can't say the same for my UL speeds, get anything from 200MB/sec to about where it should be at 627MB/sec like this one lol

| I signed up for Bell High Speed way back in 2002(?). Probably one of the first customers. At the time the standard high speed was 3 with ultra being 5. Over the years they have bumped the speeds and actually don't have a 5 anymore so my high speed is no longer listed.

@Wickens: Who is NCS ... Is that Kwic?
@aguyinbrantford: I'm surprised about the Bell speed. I saw a Marketplace show about how Bell doesn't provide the speed they promise. Do you find this speed consistent throughout the day?

| My Sympatico seems consistent across the board but about a month ago occasionally at night is seemed chuggy. Have not noticed it lately. Wife had Amtelecom a few years ago and it kept dropping the connection. Had to unplug the modem and reset it to get the connection back. | |

Retired you must have dial up HUGSSS Dialup was 3.5 kbs dowmload -- who knows what upload was. Download was about 1mb every 5 - 6 minutes. You can do the amth on large downloads

| I guess I should say that this is kwic's wireless broadband out in no mans land. Bell said it would be years before we could get phone high speed out here. They would not put a time frame on it. | |

-Actually they speed I posted (the DL) is very consistant regardless where I'm linking to, and it is right about where it should be as advertised... so I'm not sure why they are saying Bell is misleading on speed... As long as one follows the instructions when hooking up the DSL modem and you have clean lines in the house, one should have no problem obtaining advertised speeds, what I find people who have speed issues with Bell, or any other DSL service, is they more often than not have bad (dirty signal) internal wiring, faulty filters, or using crappy or too long a lead from the wall jack to the modem (should ALWAYS be under 5 feet long, clear of any power cables and of decent cable)
as far as these "speed testsers" go for me my upload speeds are all over the place from as high as 800ish (wich I believe is the advertised upload speed) to around 240KB/sec... so I use my browser (Opera) as a speed guide I find it more acurate. ...I wouldn't mind thier new service called Total Internet Max 16 with speeds up to 16MB/sec too bad it's like 80 bux lol
Also what people who critisize Bell's (or I guess any ISP for that matter) speed claims, is that the ISP usually says speeds UP TO xMB/sec, if there are impurities in your setup, you will loose speed
I used to have cable (Rogers) but it was a good $15 more than what I have now from Bell, and it is always consistant wich Rogers never was. It was anywhere between 128KBish/sec to where it topped out at 5MB/sec... whereas my DSL is between 4-5.5MB/sec

| If you have DSL and think you aren't getting the speed you think you should get try this if you don't mind working with wiring.
-Locate your breakout box (where the main phone line enters your house and splits off to the rest of the house) -Measure the shortest distance (that you can effectively route cable) to where your modem is located to the breakout box (try to route away from power lines) -If you have to cross a power line always cross perpendicular to it to get the least amount or interferance -Buy this distance in shielded phone jack cable. It's the round, solid copper core stuff that's usually found running to wall jacks -Mount a wall jack, or junction box, about as close to your DSL modem as possible. -Measure out a piece of jumper phone cable (the kind with the ends on it, and it must be less than 4-5 feet) and cut off one end -Strip off the main and red, yellow, green, and black wire casings. You are actually only using 2 of these leads for signal but hooking up all 4 won't matter -Colour match these stripped leads with the ones inside the junction/wall box and hardwire this one ended lead to the box -Now you have a dedicated sheilded line right up to your modem and will keep you running at optimal speeds for your house
You can still have bad filters, or bad wiring on other lines that can impede performance, but by doing this you can at least know that you have a clear line to the modem
I gained about 1-1.5MB/sec and got rid of intermittant line glitches by doing this as the original line to my office was going all over the place (old house)

| Good topic! This is interesting.
I'd like to know what plans people have - especially with Sympatico - in order to see how close to the max speed purchased that you are actually getting. For example, I see several over 4 Mb/s ... but Sympatico doesn't appear to have anything like that that they sell. It's either .5, 2, 7 or greater. If you can edit your posts to show what you purchased, it would be most helpful.
I realize these are "max" values, but if you purchased 7 and are only getting 4, then I think that's misleading.
I wouldn't mind getting even faster (I'm currently paying the same price for 3Mb cable as Bell's Max 10), but I also need the high upload speed for Vonage, and it appears that isn't as good with Sympatico. [edit: It appears Max 10 isn't available to me ... The fastest is 7 Mb/s.]
Those with DSL ... Do you ever find your Internet go down?

| "I realize these are "max" values, but if you purchased 7 and are only getting 4, then I think that's misleading" -The reasoning for this type of wording is your max can depend on where you are in relation to the server. It would appear I am closer to the main than you are (going by your speed post)
"For example, I see several over 4 Mb/s ... but Sympatico doesn't appear to have anything like that that they sell" -These could be older accounts, like mine for example when I signed up High Speed was maxed at around 2ish, and Ultra High Speed was 4 and change (these 2 service plans no longer exist to new customers as the things have changed) and a few years ago they doubled both plans so I went to 4 and UHS went to 8. But now the plans are all different and thats why some speeds posted my not match up to what you see posted on the Bell site.
"Those with DSL ... Do you ever find your Internet go down?" -Not here, I have been rock solid for ....almost 5yrs. The only times I have actually been down is when they did some cable upgrades in the area, and when my original modem finally said good night, ...also had a little fun when I transferred the modem to the office jack, but that was a problem caused by my old internal wiring.
"Any one on dialup try the speed test just for fun???" -Hmm I do have a modem on the server for remote access have to give it a try for shits an giggles lol
