| Apparently the work environment is different now there...they actually expect you to work for your wages.
I have heard that from a variety of people that work there.

| A casual observation for what it's worth. Having lived in the Norfolk area most of my life, as have many others, you develop many wide and far reaching social and professional networks of various kinds. A prolific poster on local internet forums becomes fairly well known and develops a reputation of sorts...intentionally or not over time. You may fall into that category, having posted on Kwic and this forum for a number of years . Without going into the details of some of these posts or making any judgements about them, it may be that you are not as anonymous on an anonymous bulletin board as you think you are. Many employers before hiring are now checking out a person's internet foot print as part of the screenng process. Facebook is just one of those sites that comes under scrutiny. So, I guess if I was a young guy looking for a job in a relatively small community I would certainly be aware that potential employers may be reading what I write or have written on the internet. End of commentary....just my observation. - SkullyCapone wrote:

| Heard a few years ago that only one employee was under 30 at the Lake Erie works, so that would explain the retirements. Also neighbours son just got hired on so they are hiring. He's in his early twenties. So in about 30 years we may have the same thread again! Also heard that they are different than Stelco, a little leaner and meaner. | |

| I have a friend that works at Stelco and has been there for close to 30 years. Yes you have to work now that US Steel has taken over. No more sleeping on the job when on night shift or you are out the door or at least warned. They have also taken away all the BBQ's, etc. I believe there are only 2 microwaves left on site so no more evening bbq's with the guys, etc. They now have 24 hour security guards that walk around inside the plant to make sure that everyone is working. My understanding is that lots of guys are retiring now because they are due to strike again next year and there could be lots more changes coming. | |

| They're trimming the fat. Cooking the books, so to speak in anticipation of selling the company in the future. Trust me...
Also, unless you know someone high up it's going to take an engineering degree to get hired there. US Steel is very adament about this...they want a skilled, educated workforce to make the upcoming sale more attractive.

| Nelson steel's newer location in Nanticoke is still closed, the markets still flat. Cost of Steel is rising, and the big 3 are cutting back on their SUV production. It would seem "Stelco" isn't rolling in the big dollars like it used to. Hence it's recent sale to US steal. Down times (recessions and such) are the best time for companies to improve infrastructer and invest money into itself. They know the market will turn back around and now is the time for restrengthening. This is what they are currently doing. | |

| We have a family member that works at Stelco. To the person who thought they had to have lots of degrees to work there guess what you're wrong. Because of people retiring they are hiring many labourers and they are people off the street. Just keep putting in your application. This family member has worked there 29 years and he's never worked overtime until this year. They have been very generous to the people working for them with upgrades and also good raises that we have never seen before have been given to us.By the way all the stuff that's on this site is not quite accurate. It' a great place to work! | |

| I have worked there for almost 29 years, since we have been taken over by US Steel things have changed. Some for the good, eg they are really really safety concious , some of the bad being they think we are stupid. In regards to the raise that one person said, the only raises occur when stipulated in the contract, which is up next year. As for them selling the plant I don't think so as it is the most modern plant that they own. Regarding Nelson Steel, we found out today that U S Steel just bought them out. Hiring has been slow but they are bringing new workers. Will I stay or retire before the next contract will depend on what there is in it. Is U S Steel a good place to work? Like I said it has its good points and bad points | |

| about the raise the person is on salary, it must be different for you.I know they wonder what's going to happen when the contract comes up.Now they have to wear long sleeve shirts even in the summer and no jewelery. That's dumb | |

I think you'll those two particular rules in most modern manufacturing facilities to be the norm. U.S. Steel is big on safety for a reason. There's quite a few accidents were people lose a finger because they were wearing a wedding band.

From a safety standpoint alone, I'd be very leery of working for any manufacturing firm that allowed the wearing of any jewellry on the plant floor . . .

| my comments were about people having to wear long sleeve shirts in the summer. When you work in a place for 29 years and all of a sudden big changes it's a shock to the person especiallly when they hate change.Hey I agree with you about the safety , these places have to cover their butts. | |
