| It looks like the Natives are not allowing any construction in Brantford. Check out this video: http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1103901 | |

| I think it's just about time for me to pack up and go back to Ireland......just give the natives all the land back and see how long they last against the American's....who.....if I'm correct....don't really do ANYTHING for the natives..... I could be wrong..... I think they have it pretty damn good here considering how the rest of the world looks at this point. | |

| I agree, why are they not arrested for breaking the law with the court order they received. They should be tasered as quick as we are. | |

| I think the city is equally to blame in this case. They are trying to get all the building or whatever they are doing on this disputed land developed before the issues can be heard in court and also rubbing it in the face of the indians. The developers have been warned day after day that if they continue to build they will face protests, they never stopped building so now they must face the music.
Both parties should get off the disputed land until the courts decide who has rights to it

| What is the disputed land? Do we have a map? Far as I can tell the disputed land is everything. | |

| The point that irritates me is in the paper it says they are breaking the law according to the court order.....well....are they above the law from the Brantford police as well as the OPP. | |

| Any land can be disputed. If a native claims that a treaty was not fulfilled, it is considered disputed, and needs to be proven one way or another. A classic example is the grounds of the old elementary school in Hagersville. One tribe claims they legitimately sold their land to the town of Hagersville years ago. Another band claims they didn't agree with the way it was done, thus putting it into dispute. The end result is the land sits vacant, and the construction, jobs and income has been put on hold.
By continually claiming land, be it legit or not, they can actually kill the economy until they get what they want. We become so tied up with political correctness that we fail to see what makes common sense. Take, for example, the bus loads of university students that had come from Toronto to Caledonia to support the natives. It is easy to jump on trendy political issues until it impacts the person directly, as in the taking away of their house or farm.
At the moment the people in Brantford are acting within the law. They have the legal right, according to the law, to build on the sites they purchased and have building permits for. The same applies to Caledonia. The government claims they have the documentation proving the land was sold, so the building should continue. Yet, in order to maintain the peace, the Ont. Govt. bought the land and allow the natives to occupy it, paying their heat, hydro and water. We can continue to back down, but eventually, as we head into a recession, we are hurting ourselves and the natives as well. Shutting down the building industry, as well as the construction of stores, roads etc. will speed up the recession and put many people out of work. As it starts to negetively effect people and their ability to put food on the tables for their families, they may be less willing to give in to political correctness and the natives will lose their bagaining chip.

| Playing devil's advocate here. I do not understand the issue. They are protesting; the paper, the thread starter among others refer to it as a protest. It is not illegal from the perspective of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, unless that has changed since 1982. Prior was 1960 iirc Bill of Rights. Everyone should know about this document. Look up Freedom of Assembly. On another note the City of Brantford only leased a part of thee land that it now occupies; 99 year term. Websters: A formal objection, especially one by a group; A collective gesture of disapproval, sometimes violent; to make a strong objection; to affirm something; to object to Later AJ | |

Later AJ AJ, it is not illegal to protest as long as it coincides with the right to PEACEFUL assembly. Uprooting and tearing apart construction fences, which are private property, and threatening others with physical violence is not peaceful. Also the lease you believe to be only 99 years actually states 999 years on the signed agreement. Not all Native peoples condone these actions and the protestors only represent the minority of local Natives.

| But are they local? That's the question. There's a group from NY state that seems to be involved in Caledonia. | |

I normally stay out of these sorts of topic's, but, are you serious??? So should all Native's be wiped out or just the protesters? Can't believe anyone would make such a statement, I know people are frustrated but come on...

| He merely means deal with it and move on...live your own life. I don't think he really wants them all dead.
Were here now, we're not going anywhere...the natives came across the land bridge anyway, what if a friggin iceman came back and wanted his land back?
Idiots.
Where does this end?? | |

| I'm sure that's what he meant as well (with what wetnozes said) and like I mentioned... that idea has already been tried. thats why we are where we are now (with the protests and whatnot) | |

| It looks like the proverbial "you know what" hit the fan today in Brantford. To think that the Brantford police had the audacity to arrest a protester for assault! I hope the protester hasn't had any recent concussions that would have "made him do it" I hear that is the "going" defence these days.
