PORT DOVER, Ont. (CP) — An Ontario angler is facing a fraud charge after allegedly stuffing a weight into a salmon at a fishing derby.
The Port Dover, Ont., man told police he inserted a one-pound weight into the salmon as a “joke” to impress his wife.
He entered the fish in the recent derby on Lake Ontario, which offered a payout of $500 for the biggest catch of the day.
However, officials smelled something fishy when they noticed the length and girth of the salmon didn’t seem to suit its 20-pound weight.
They looked inside and detected the added steel weight.
Norval Boufford — a former Angler of the Year prize winner — was disqualified and charged with fraud under $5,000 by Niagara Region police
