Foodland Ontario on Harmony Road!

I am truly amazed at the variety of agricultural land use along Harmony Road between Brantford Road and hwy.#24. I drive this route almost daily and now with the new crops coming up, it occurred to me what an interesting variety of crops exist along this roadway.

There's ginseng, soybeans, potatoes, strawberries, peppers, apple trees, Saskatoon berries! rye, corn, sod, flowers, honey, and, I believe, cucumbers. There may also be tomato plants in those plastic-covered, moisture-preserving ridges, but I could not tell for sure.

Near the 911 #1328, there is another short grain crop which is not rye, with heavy heads and kind of "whiskers" on top...?

There is not one field of tobacco! So if anyone wants to take a look at alternative crops....Harmony Road is the place to go!

Just hope they all have a market for the items they are growing. Its not that we can't grow the stuff here its that you have to have a place to sell it!

Doesnt sound like anything different than i see around here every year, langton, tillsonburg, delhi, simcoe, there is different crops all over and most of the people trying those crops are and have been tobacco farmers. The problem remains the debt load these farmers have due to tobacco, the new crops they grow will keep them afloat for a while but it is not enough to support a family plus pay off a half million debt due to the tobacco issues.

If you really want to see a boom in the area without fears or trying things going all out, then there needs to be some help for local farmers, until then you will see a farmer try something see its not enough to help him and quit. With a clean slate I know I personally would be jumping into many things but right now its near impossible.
