Some of you may have seen the directions for a mosquito trap made with the 2 litre pop bottle, yeast, brown sugar, water etc.

It was supposedly a science project by some Taiwanese kids. I made one because I had the materials....and I did not catch even ONE mosquito! Not even one brave mosquito dared enter my menacing trap covered in black paper over a period of three days! So don't waste your time.

I have recently read that if you rub BASIL all over yourself, mosquitoes don't like the smell of it. And you'd probably smell like pesto! (Or maybe it was sage and you'd smell like turkey stuffing??!)

By the way, did you get your rhubarb at the market? I was lucky at Simcoe Market. I got a big pile of it. And made some rhubarb strawberry sauce/jam and will make a pie another day.

It was so cool and gray here this morning, so I didn't venture out. But I will tomorrow for sure! My hubby and I are developing these little round tummies from too many good things to eat! He blames all his weight gain on my cooking. (I think there's a compliment in there somewhere.....)
I'm going to try your recipe for rhubarb pie. Sounds divine.

PostSubject: Alternative methods...   mosquito traps Icon_minitimeFri Jun 20, 2008 9:24 pm

You may have missed the alternatives for this technique posted on another Forum by an expert in mosquito control and pest control.... Idea

How to Kill Mosquitoes by Hand
Mosquitoes can be nasty critters that spread a variety of diseases. Killing them with bug spray can be a noxious experience, so try these steps to kill them effectively without the use of poisons.

Fly Swatter Technique

1. Wait for the mosquitoes to settle on a surface

2. Bring your swatter down on them with a single quick and fluid motion.

3. Repeat until the offending insect is dead.

Vacuum Cleaner Technique

1. Turn on the portable vacuum cleaner.

2. Wait for the mosquito to settle on a flat surface that doesn't have any debris that may accidentally be sucked up into the vacuum.

3. Vacuum that little bugger up.

Rubber Band Technique

1. Extend rubber band on thumb whilst holding the other end with 2 fingers.

2. Aim and let go of the end that is not on your thumb.

The Quick Hand Technique

There are two options: Hit it in the mid-air or wait for it to land first
Hit it in the mid-air

1. Mosquitoes are attracted by your scent, when you find a mosquito hovering around you, bring your hands up in front of your head. Keep your breath steady, exhale gently towards the Mosquito (Mosquito is also sensitive to Carbon dioxide from your breath), and hit it with a well aimed clap!

Or

2. Wait for it to land

3. Mosquitoes are tricky little buggers, they would fly in any direction and land anywhere (So you cannot wait for them near a light source). If you want to wait for it to land first, you could lose track of it in any second. But if you are lucky, after the mosquito lands; stay as you are and wait for a few seconds before slowly and steadily approaching the target. With lightning speed, strike it with your quickest hand with a upward action(start from lower position and strike upwards). Keep open eye of the whole picture while you hit it, because if you misses the first hit, the mosquito would likely to take off upwards and it would be easy for you to spot and try to hit him in the mid-air again! But this time you have to strike fast!

# These techniques work for a variety of flying insects in addition to mosquitoes.

## Things You'll Need - Fly swatter, portable vacuum cleaner or a rubber band.
