| Maybe I should start a new thread here: (Though I posted a reply in the Herbal Magic strand.)
Here's something of interest from a magazine called "First" which I am considering: This is a 3 day plan. You start with one high protein day which shifts the body from burning glycogen (carbs) to burning body fat for energy. Then a 2-day "fruit cleanse."
Day 1-Drink a protein shake ( 1 scoop whey powder, soy powder or eggwhite powder with 8 oz. water) every two hours thro the day. Then eat a 6 CUP!!! ( you will start to grow rabbit ears!) raw veggie salad with 6 oz. lean protein, 1/2 avocado or 2 T. olive oil and the juice of 1 lemon or lime.
Day 2 and 3..Eat one serving of fresh seasonal fruit every two hours. For dinner enjoy a protein smoothie and a 6-cup raw veggie salad with 1/2 avocado etc. as above.
After the 3 days, you eat as much raw fruit as you wish for breakfast, lunch and between meals whenever hunger strikes. For dinner, 3 to 5 oz of lean protein, chicken or fish..with a large veggie salad and unlimited berries.
Supposedly cleanses your liver and tricks your body into thinking you are full by eating foods low on the energy density scale. That means they contain a lot of water and take up a lot of volume on the plate. Yet they have few calories. The fibre and protein molecules in fruit slow absorption of water. This makes you feel full longer.Pectin in fruit acts like a sponge in the digestive tract binding to fats before they can be absorbed. Pectin also forms a kind of gel in the gut that is digested slowly and carries the fat along with it and out.
Doing a "fruit cleanse " now can flush fat and bloat, rejuvenate damaged cellls and speed metabolism. It will surely improve your digestion!!
So with all the strawberries, watermelon and etc. at the markets right now...a good time to change your eating style! Not sure I can go 3 days on fruit alone...but worth a try to adjust your in-between snacks from donuts and chips to FRUIT! Simple enough, even if you just replace some of your fat snacks with fruit. Seems to make sense.
Here are the fruits that are best acc to their energy density: (the highlighted ones are the best) strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, grapefruit, cantalope, honeydew, papaya, peaches, tangerines, apricots, pineapple, plums, blueberries, apples. and oranges.
The "fruit flush" supposedly fires up your liver to burn fat 3X faster!

| Rye..you're bein' too black and white/simplistic again!
There are MANY reasons why people cannot lose weight! It's not all due to overeating. Bodies are as different and unique as snowflakes. Good thing you have one that's fit and fine. Just wait for middle age! People inherit sluggish metabolisms...some necessary drugs cause weight-gain. It goes on and on. It's not just one thing and it's not that simple.

| I was going to post this in the Herbal Magic thread, but thought I'd jump in here....
As someone who was actively involved professionally in the fitness field for a number of years, had extensive training both professionally and personally, I can attest to this:
There is NO magic diet, magic pill or magic work-out that will help you lose weight, maintain weight, gain muscle and become HEART healthy.
There is NO cure for being overweight, fat, obese or whatever term you are comfortable with attaching to someone who does not fall under Nutrition and Health Guidelines and Standards.
The ONLY way to lose weight and maintain a weight WHICH IS HEALTHY FOR YOU....is this...
ARE YOU READY FOR IT?????
Is good old fashioned exercise AND a healthy diet!!!!!!!
You can exercise everyday, all day and it won't do much if you gorge on pizza and beer every night.
You can do all the sit ups, crunches, curls, all you want but it won't give you the much coveted "six pack".
You cannot "target" a body part to lose weight.
For the average person who wishes to maintain a healthy weight and heart; doing 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise 3X per week while practicing a healthy diet consisting of the major food groups is sufficient.
Obviously, athletes have different needs and requirements based upon their chosen sport and I won't go into that here.
This is a very generic, in a nutshell approach but with all the hype out there about diets and magic weight loss remedies I just had to give my two cents.

| I still remind those of you who have a very slick answer...that MANY drugs and ailments lead to weight gain...or loss. And it 's not so easy as to simply say that what food you eat controls all things, including metabolism.
Take a look at the side effects of Nexium, antidepressants, thyroid meds, steroids/prednisone being used for severe asthma and allergic reactions as well as for cancer treatment and MS. Sometimes in huge, huge doses. Once you have put your body through such a regimen, it cannot help but metabolize in a different way than previously. As well, menopause puts on weight as does inherited genetic tendencies toward body shape and weight gain or loss.
Slick, easy answer? No.

| CKing....my answer wasn't slick...it was very basic and once again "in a nutshell and very generic"
I agree wholeheartedly certain medications can cause weight gain.
Being a male or female has it's differences when it comes to weight gain.
Age is also a factor.
Certain illnesses cause weight gain.
Despite ALL of these conditions, unless an individual is ill or disabled in a way that prevents regular, moderate exercise or is advised against exercise by a health provider; a well balanced diet with proper exercise can always assist in weight loss or maintenance.
Individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle will likely find they recover quicker from illness or surgery and no matter what your medical condition is or what type of medication you may be on, a properly monitored exercise regimen will likely increase your overall sense of well being; subsequently making one feel and look better.
There is no black and white issue here at all; many variables contribute to weight gain/loss and is different for everyone.
