| ......Or is that not done anymore? They seemed a little strange and antiquated when I was a child, notwithstanding the fact my parents were not versed in them to teach them to me. Just wondering....? You may find your favorites here.... http://www.mothergoose.com/Rhymes/Azrhymes.htm | |

| My granddaughters and I sure know all of them! Kids who learn the rhymes seem to have a better understanding of language and patterns and rhymes and rhythms. Phonics and vowel sounds and all that come easier to kids with a sense of the variety of language in all its forms. Spoken, sung or written.
All the toddler songs too...Old MacDonald and Itsy Bitsy Spider and Ring Around the Rosie. People On The Bus. Any kids who go to daycare or nursery school usually get a good foundation in all of that.
It's all good for language development. There are CD's and storybooks still full of those great rhymes.
Now, does everyone teach the kids these songs and rhymes? Maybe not. Perhaps Dora and Diego and the Wiggles etc. have filled in with more timely topics and more interesting adventures. I still love them though..so feel it's important to pass them on.

| All the old ones had a reason and purpose. A rhyme or song is easy to remember without mistakes. | |

| Parents have a busy and difficult chore raising children these days with all the distractions of the current pop culture. What I wonder about is the effect of losing some of these 'oral traditions' passed down from generation to generation. Some are specific to certain cultural and ethnic backgrounds, some are family and 'tribe' specific...but all are part of our culture and tradition. Also, it seems that as well as being enjoyable there is a cognitive component to learning all these rhymes and jingles. And those skipping rhymes and ditties...are they gone by the wayside now. I don't recall seeing kids skipping like they used to.... | |

| OH, those skipping rhymes! I loved them all. Funny you should mention that. I just bought a book of them at Coyle's near Tillsonburg. For old times' sake.
And yes, my granddaughter skips like a little machine. She is 8. I loved the skipping rhymes and knew them all but never was a very good skipper. Never got the hang of double dutch!!

| My grandbabies know them. FYI most are political. Ring around the Rosie, is about the Plague, 4 and 20 Blackbirds if I remember is about King George (the one the US had the problem with) and London Bridge was really falling down! People couldn't read (except the VERY rich) but they could remember rhymes. Don't feel to bad for Miss S, cking I never mastered Double Dutch either! I'm holding down a full time job and pay my taxes on time! So there is hope. To see skipping I think you'll have to visit a school yard at recess. I don't think alot of parents let their kids play on the side walk anymore. | |

| CKing what is the title of the book? My daughter loves to skip and hula hoop. I think it would be good to get her the book also so she can learn all them also. I for one loved to skip and knew alot of rhymes but I cannot remember them now | |
