Rye finally got out from under Bell. There is a thread on here about all his troubles.

We would go Starchoice but like you say they want you to pay up front for the equipment.

I left Bell a couple of years ago and went with Starchoice...they are a bit pricey going in but
I have to say their customer service is way better and I am satisfied with the product...I have
considered "free to air" but those I know who have it say it is very high maintenance and I hate
to be down when I want to watch something...been there done that

Well I'll have to buy it up front because I have no credit basically....

Unless I can buy one from future shop or best buy or something and get a payment plan there...its not even that bad to buy it but my bell contract to get out of it ended up costing me over 600 dollars altogether....but I don't even care anymore I'm paying it to get out of their bs....

We have had Star choice for about four years now and are very happy with the customer service they provide. The price is fine too.

Yeah I think I might want to get HD though...not much point having a 46" HD tv without it Very Happy I'll have enough monies by the 13th of july (the cancellation date) to afford the box but I just wanted to make sure they had good service, their equipment is good, and they care more than bell. Thanks!

My wife and I are starchoice customers since day one . We own a DVR 530 and have since they were made available . BEST money we ever spent . Thats not to say that the receiver can't have a few hiccups now and again but these are few and far between and easily corrected by resetting the receiver. We love recording programs digitally and zipping thru the commercials. We found out the other day that starchoice now gives free lifetime replacement warranty on the receiver ,if you have problems you call, talk to tech support who really do know what they are doing, if its not repairable over the phone they ship you a new one with a shipping label to return the old one at their expense . We find the easiest way to get through to a csr is to call at off peak hours either early or late and guess what they are actually friendly and appear to like their jobs . The wait is not to long or you have the option of them calling you back which they do within a few minutes ! Hope this helps .One other thing allmost all of the HD channels are free .

I've priced out all of the channels that I would want and them some extras and it turns out it will be about 20 bucks less per month than Bell was....so that's great news...

I think I might spurge and buy the DVR since I've had it I can't go back either....screw the commercials! haha...and it's great when you're out and might miss a show that's only on once or something....

Startup cost for starchoice is $689 to buy the dvr receiver...installation..tax..etc... but I'll have a $150 credit for buying the HD DVR receiver so that will be on the first bill which should mean the first couple months will be free (in essence)....

Thanks for the input!

This is what we did.
TV died, got another with HD capabilities.
Thought about what to do for it.
We are already with Amtelecom cable-so added their digital. I was in Aylmer anyway-picked up the boxes, they set them up over the wire all good. Am renting the HD DVR for now. Bonus to us we did not lose any local cable programming, and no dish. One other benefit - their support people are all on this continent, with english as their FIRST language.
When I was out on the farm , used Star-Choice and was very happy with their service-this was pre-HD era.
Right now have Bell Internet-I was one of their first subscribers-happy with my high speed.
Have Bell cellular on 2 phones-happy with it too.
Have Bell phone in the house happy with that too, just use the long distance deals from others-$1 for 45 min North America wide.We call Florida and Alberta daily.
My office has switched to Bell for 4 Blackberries and about 6-7 Cel phones - working out well.
Bell is OK if you don't have to call them-that's when your brain explodes- trying to explain what seems to you as a simple concept.
