I've been invited to an Engagement Party (and probably a forthcoming bridal shower and wedding). Does one take a gift to an Engagement Party? I say no, but another friend says to take a token gift. How do you feel about this? (BTW, the future bride and groom have been a long time couple and well known to invited guests)

According to BellaOnline... there are no gifts given at engagement parties... see here : http://weddings.bellaonline.com/articles/art6180.asp

UPDATE: The bride and groom to be rec'd lots of gifts for their engagement party. The majority of gifts came as a gift card within the congratulatory card and many beautiful sliver buckets of booze! Next time I'll be that much wiser and take something.

Why would you take something? Its an emgagement Party NOT a shower or a wedding! Sounds like a money/gifts grab!!! A card wishing the couple best wishes should be enough. I'm sorry if I sound a little upset by this but it seems that a lot of couples are hosting whatever parties to get the MOST they can these days. Will the Brides Mom be hosting a Bridal Tea too? If so you don't take gifts to that either. That's usually held between the shower and the wedding and any gifts from the shower are on display. Also wedding gifts should NEVER be taken to the reception. They should be dropped off at the home of the bride/her parents before the wedding.

I don't think the bride and groom or her parents thought of this as a gift grab as the engagement party invitation did say "Best Wishes Only". I had sent them a card six months ago, days after they became engaged. I believe most people are just generous, wanting to help out the young couple as much as possible. Or not to appear cheap. And, maybe, some take a small gift because everyone else does! Not sure. Live and learn I guess.
