PostSubject: adhesive nightmare   adhesive nightmare Icon_minitimeWed Aug 20, 2008 1:35 pm

This is a rather mundane topic to request help with but I've reached the limit. I purchased a new teflon coated frypan which had to makers name etc. on a round disk of paper covering the bottom of the pan. Upon trying to remove this paper, only a small slip peeled off, leaving the balance firmly stuck. After soaking in hot water, the top layer of paper was removed, leaving all the adhesive firmly embedded in the grooves. I've tried using a SOS pad to no avail. I've tried scrubbing with a nail brush - same result. I tried setting the pan inside another pan of boiling water, hoping to melt the darn stuff. I've even tried using mayonaise - nothing, nada, zilch. That adhesive is still just as sticky on the bottom of that pan.

Anyone suggest a solution before I trudge back to the store and return the dratted thing!!

Someone suggested WD40 to me once for that problem.

No idea if it actually works or not though.

I believe the name of it is "Goo Gone". It's an adhesive removal product you can pick-up at Canadian Tire. I've used it on lots of surfaces, but nothing resembling Teflon. Give it a try!

I'd take the frying pan back to the store. What's to say that you haven't worn off some of the effectiveness of the teflon coating by now? And even if that's not considered, I'd still return it and tell customer service why.
Goo Gone would have been my suggestion too. We use it for all label removals. You use such a small amount. The bottle has been in my home for 7 years for sure!

Years ago, my father-in-law showed me that using a little vegetable oil, and a good dry cleaning cloth, removes most sticky labels from everything... including new frypans.
I have had great luck with this, and have found it works for me everytime.

Thanks for your suggestions. Obviously I didn't explain clearly that this adhesive is on the underside of the bottom of the pan, not on the teflon coating. I tried the WD40 and it loosened the glue, but because of all the grooves on the bottom of the pan, it isn't very easy to remove. I grabbed one of my husbands golf tees and ran it along the groove and it picked up the glue. However, there's a lot of grooves on this pan so I think I'll be returning it to the store!!

If nothing sticks to teflon, why does it stick to the pan????

Simply remove the handle with the appropriate tool, build a small backyard smelting oven, using bricks. Fill the pan about 2/3rds of the way up with some old used fishing sinkers, or small glass marbles to help the pan retain its shape while heating. Heat the whole thing up to about 1500 degrees F* using a combination of hardwood and coal fire, allow the pan to heat till red hot and remove carefully with a pair of fireplace tongs and quench it quickly in a large vat of used bacon grease and the sticker will be gone. Easy as pie. Note please do not breathe the teflon vapours as they can be toxic.
* NOTE: if your thermometer doesn't go up to 1500degrees F, you can test it in the same manner you check a hot BBQ, Place your hand in, and you should only be able to stand the heat for about 1/1000th of a millisecond (for this you may need a quality egg timer). I hope this helps your dilemna.
