| I remember buying my first Carhartt coat at Varey's Mens Wear in Dover, buying Kamiks boots from Brown's, and being able to run around the entire neighbourhood, without the worry of anyone calling the cops on us kids for playing too loudly or trespassing! I also remember the treat of getting soft-serve icecream from Jill 'n Daves down by the beach, and buying a can of pop and bag of chips from Joans (the "little store") costing under 50 cents altogether! | |

| Yes CKing, I also remember when I was a youngster a small coke was .07 and a large was .10 When I was 16 years old i made $1.25 an hour. Primers got $14.00 a day. Ice cream cones came from a roll you unraveled like cookie doe, and then there were the ice cream dixi-cups. When I turned 16 a quart of milk was .25 as well as a hamburg at the Dairy Bar. In 1972 I bought a new Mazda for $2300. from Holister Motors in Tillsonburg. I was just looking at an old Union Gas bill from 1997 in April for $10.97. When I was married in 1971 my hydro bill was every 2 months and many times it was just a minimum charge. | |

| The Port Dover beach ...
Perch and chips at Murph's. Battered and cooked fresh while you watch (unlike the pre-cooked crap from any Knectles restaurant). Man - No one has come close to achieving that great taste. I wonder if the son serves perch at his new restaurant?
Listening to tunes played loud from the outdoor jukebox (now where the surf shop is) while you strolled along the boardwalk and soaked up the summer sun.
Standing by the Ferris wheel waiting for a free ride (whenever there was a couple of paying customers, he needed two more to balance the wheel).
The "unique" smell of the bowling alley.
The penny arcade (well ... may have been a nickel during my time).

| Yes, there was an air raid siren at that location and another in the field at north public school. I was so scared when I found out what they were. Thought there would be an air raid or something. Was scared they'd go off sometime | |

| They have a flower bed now where the siren used to stand.... I remember as a kid, hating that thing... it kept going off almost every time we had a bad thunderstorm! Anyone remember "Bunk's" little grocery store at the gore where the vacuum place is now? Used to love going there. | |

| We lived in the country. I remember Patton's store in Teeterville, where we rented a freezer locker before before we had a chest freezer. Right there was Jack's barbershop where I got my brushcut and read magazines where people had black bars over their eyes. I still remember the blacksmith's shop and the hotel in Windham Centre. I attended a one room school (The McKnight School)when I was in grade one for a while.
My mom's roots were in Otterville, and we did not come into Simcoe much when I was young. We did a lot of business at Finch's General Store. I remember they had a full bunch of bananas hanging from the ceiling, and they went and picked your order for you. Tillsonburg was another place we went a lot.
Funny what you remember... One strong memory is the smell of the smoke house on my grandmother's farm . What came out of there wasn't too bad either! My mom says my grandad's still is hidden in the woods there-I never did find it.
Spent a lot of time at the Hungarian Hall in Delhi-lots of weddings and banquets there. I wasn't very old, but I remember all the refugees at the hall after the Hungarian Revolution in '56. For a few years we had a lot of them working for us at harvest and as hired men.
Oh! and my grandad in Port Rowan made some of the best wine I have tasted.

| I remember Hubbard's store as well. The best place ever for penny candy, chips and pop. Every saturday, down we would go to cash in pop bottles being pulled on a metal red wagon. We would come home with a pile of penny candy and some cash left to save. We also played many outdoor games. Kick the can, Hide and seek, Football, you name it, we played it and we didn't go back inside until our curfew time was up. We never stayed inside, unless of course, it was raining. Those were wonderful memories. | |
