PostSubject: quitting smoking   quitting smoking Icon_minitimeWed Aug 13, 2008 3:26 pm

Well this morning i decided to quit smokin, sore throat, feelin tired all the time, cant do much without falling over gasping for air. Im trying that champix and I also got some chewin tobacco to ease my nic fits and its pretty damn good actually, only problem is my wife doesnt like cup full of spit everywhere I go Laughing

Anyone try this champix before? Ive tried lazer theropy, smoking crappy tasting smokes, cigars until I coughed so hard my face turned purple, ive tried alot of crap over the years and in the end I said screw this and lit up again. Im not neccessarly in the belief that smoking kills you or is any worse than anything else we consume everyday but none the less I think its time to try and quit again.

My husband had Champix but threw it in the garbage when he read the possible side effects. Decided they were worse than the side effects of smoking!

HEALTH CANADA ADVISORY
June 13, 2008
Health Canada has issued new warnings concerning the use of Champix® (varenicline). To read the full Health Canada Advisory, visit Health Canada's web site at www.hc-sc.gc.ca.

Cure your cough and then in small print it says "could cause impotence, could cause kidneys to shut down, could cause brain damage

haha, thats the same with every drugs out there, they make drugs to stop drugs and then you find out the drugs you took to stop you from using the other drug actually was doing you in at a faster rate.

Im gonna try it for a few weeks anyways

This was the main issue:
Subject: New safety information regarding CHAMPIX® (varenicline tartrate)
from June 2008.

CHAMPIX (varenicline tartrate) is one treatment option available to help quit smoking. Pfizer Canada in consultation with Health Canada is advising consumers of important safety information regarding CHAMPIX®. Since the introduction of CHAMPIX in Canada, in April 2007 through April 30, 2008, a total of 226 Canadian cases of neuropsychiatric adverse events have been reported. For the same time period, there have been 708 534 prescriptions filled for CHAMPIX in Canada1.

A number of patients taking CHAMPIX have experienced unusual feelings of agitation, depressed mood, hostility, changes in behavior or impulsive or disturbing thoughts such as thoughts of self-harm or harm to others.

Tell your doctor if you have experienced depression or other mental health problems before taking CHAMPIX as these symptoms may worsen while taking CHAMPIX.

Stop taking CHAMPIX and tell your doctor right away if you, your family or caregiver noticed any of these symptoms, if you experienced these symptoms in a way that is not typical for you, or if you have thoughts of self-harm or harm to others.

CHAMPIX has not been studied in people with mental health problems, and therefore your doctor will be monitoring you closely for new or worsened emotional or behavioral problems while on CHAMPIX.

Skully, I quit 11.5 years ago.

After having tried the patch, gums, acupuncture, hypnosis, subliminal tapes, and so on, over 300 attempts, I'm sure - what worked for me was cold turkey.

Different things work for different people, and I think it all boils down to the fact that you will successfully quit cigarettes only when you are truly ready. I had a serious health scare - went cold turkey and never looked back.

I wish you every success.

Good for you Skully! Good luck! I've never tried smoking, ever, but I do understand Will Power. It's not easy to find him when you need him......I say as I head off for some frozen yogurt! LOL

I agree It's been over 20 tears but it was cold turkey once I had made up my mind. I even left a pack in my locker so I looked at it every time I opened it. The hard part was what do I do with my hands now.

The method I used to kick the "pack a day" habit was to record all my smokes for a week...
Then you just smoke at exactly the same times every day while reducing by one
per day from the original list....Took me a month and the withdrawl was not nearly
as bad as previous attempts....Still gotta really want to quit though...
Got about a dozen years behind me now

That is the key. You have to want to quit.
Wife used Champix and it worked like a charm with no side effects.

Skully...good luck to you!

My husband and I have both been smoke free since January 23 of this year! YIPPEE for us! We used Laser Therapy, but really I think it was determination to just quit once and for all. We were both heavy smokers and we both just LOVED that cigarette!!!

It's not easy and almost 7 months later, can still feel very strong cravings...but they pass QUICKLY...

YOU CAN DO IT!

WE'LL HELP!!!!

Skully, every time you feel the need to have a cigarette in your hand, go online and send us a note. Someone is always online to lend a hand!
Congrats to jjginder and hubby. You are right...it's the determination factor!

I quit September 2001.

I still crave them daily, and miss it horribly.

but

I feel MUCH better, I've got some extra cash, and I don't stink (at least that I'm aware of <BG>)

Okay Skully, Day 2......think of the great example you are setting for your children and grandchildren. When you feel you need to vent, or be angry look at a sweet picture of one of the kids.

I quit smoking 16 years ago and I had smoked for at least 16 years. The only way to quit for me was cold turkey and as it was said in an earlier post, you have to "want to" quit. It isn't easy that's for sure.
