Garage floor paint Empty
PostSubject: Garage floor paint   Garage floor paint Icon_minitimeMon Aug 04, 2008 4:42 pm

Planning to paint the garage floor to keep down dust and dirt. Would like to know what others have used or tried or what paint would be recommended. Hopefully, this will encourage getting rid of stuff in the garage and eventually have room for the car.

Any thouights or suggestions?

In the process of winterizing my garage a few years ago, I also used an epoxy primer and then a reddish coat of epoxy paint. You can get various colors...that was just my personal preference. The brand was Behr, as I recall. The main thing is to clean and power wash the floor. I don't think I used anything harsh like miuretic acid. Just soap, a power washer and lots of elbow grease. The primer is a white, sticky watery consistency...quite tacky to the touch.
I applied both primer and the epoxy as per instructions...and they are pretty explicit. I got my stuff at Home Depot as the local building outlets didn't have what I wanted. So far the garage looks good after 4 years. The only defects are the pit marks and blemishes from the original concrete floor...they still show thro' in places.
I toyed with the idea of just ordinary concrete paint but went for the epoxy thinking it would hold up better...and it has.
That's my own experience with painting garage floors. Hope it helps.

BTW, I did this during a hot humid week and it was pretty brutal. There is a strong smell with the primer too. So plan your work accordingly.....not the hottest day of the summer. Laughing I think I wore a proper mask/filter for the job as called for , as well.

About four years ago, we did our garage floor, much the same as Jonas' description and with the same products. I power washed our floor for hours and hours on a hot humid day. (Never again BTW!) We didn't drive on the floor for a week, as per instructions. However, within the first year, we noticed the paint came up wherever the hot tires sat.
Next week, we are doing the floor again but with a different procedure. Recommended by the Home Depot folks. It's called Behr 1 part Epoxy for garage floors. Sure hope this lasts longer. Some of you may appreciate this....I only have to clean half the floor because we 'had' to carpet the other half for our classic car!!! LOL Not just one layer of carpet, but two!! It seems my hubby felt the first carpet was too thin...or something! I just love telling this story! It must be a guy thing because I sure don't understand it at all!!! But it sure makes me laugh...........

This can be a hit or miss kind of project, most of the DIY products are ok, but I would spend a little more and have it done right. Merely powerwashing the floor is OK if it is new, but older floors can many years of absorbed chemicals (oil, paint etc) and should be shot blasted to get a proper longlasting seal.
Like I was saying this can be a little more costly, but through my experience (industrial mechanic) if you plan on using the floor for many many years, have someone come in and do it for you.

Here is an example of a company out of TO that also does residential floor epoxy coverings just to give you an idea

Thanks for the comments. I think I may tackle this myself since the garage floor has not yet been exposed to too much dirt. I also need to figure out how to reduce the spaces along the garage door, the type that rools up in sections. Since the garage becomes extremely hot during the summer and cold during winter (normal, is it not) I have been toying with the idea of insulating the garage walls. Is there ever an end to DIY projects?

We had to buy a new garage door a couple of years ago, upgrading to an insulated door. We've noticed a huge difference in how much warmer the garage is during the winter months. In summer, it is slightly cooler too until the door opens and lets in all the hot humid air.
