Anyone out there proficient with Win Server O/S's?
I have upgraded the power in my home server (an actual server not just a reg PC) with a new pair of CPU's as well as a much needed RAM boost... and decided I would upgrade the O/S from adv Server 2000 to Server 2003 and give MS one last chance before I go full out Linux (Ubuntu Server) Seems the difference in 2003 and 2000 is more than I would have thought. I did a fresh install and thats about where I'm hung. With 2000 getting permissions and whattnot for drive accesability over the network was fairly easy, with 2003 it's a little more indepth than I'm used to. So I was wondering if anyone was good with the workings with Win Server O/S's that could help me get it running
I use the server as a file server for the other PC's in the house as well as use it for a 3rd party machine for drive maintainence for the other PC's (virus scans, etc)

I ended up dumping '03 and moving back to 2000 adv. server. But I was having some grief gaining acces to the storage drives (4 of them) over the LAN.
I gave permissions, shared the drives, opened user accounts and gave access through the firewall, but all I could do is see the server over the LAN, but kept getting refused access. and since I needed it back online ASAP i just swapped back my 2000 O/S HDD and carried on with my old setup.

One day when I refresh myself on Linux, I want to drop on Ubuntu Server 7.10, but that's so far of MS's GUI server platforms, I will have to re-read up on Linux commands and structure before I'll attempt it. Might set up a dummy server for testing

NEX 6320A Dual SKT 370 MB w/dual LAN, dual channal onboard Ultra 160 Adaptec 7899 SCSI controller
2x PIII 866MHz Coppermine CPU's
4x KINGSTON KVR133X72C2/256 PC133 ECC RAM (1GB total)
3x SAMSUNG-SV8004H-80GB HDD
1x SAMSUNG-SV1203N-120GB HDD (all Samsung's on a HighPoint HPT368 RAID controller card, I don't have any SCSI's for the onboard controller)
1x LG CD-RW
1x Removable IDE HDD tray

so technically there is no problem anymore..you are back using your old 2k set-up.

try the ubuntu next time, make sure to read up on samba if you want to use a mixed [ms/unix] lan

good luck

Ya I had to switch back, for now anyways. I'm getting a handful of Linux server software and test em out to see wich works the best.
Thanx for the samba tip, I was wondering on what might be a good link

debian is probably your best bet if you are looking for a "bombproof" linux server setup..

If you want the "whole enchilada" then I would use Freebsd it is the most secure and reliable system.

These two are the most up to date and supported systems in use by professionals at the moment.

heres a few links

hope this helps

good luck
